After many years of managing inner city housing estates for local authorities I left the concrete jungle for the real one and studied forestry at Plumpton College in East Sussex. I received an HND with distinction but was sidetracked from my initial interest in Forestry Management whilst doing work experience at Thomlinson’s sawmill in East Sussex. Milling out Oak Beams I came into contact with local timber framers. My employer, Richard Thomlinson and a local oak framer Steve Turner conspired to teach me green oak framing. After leaving college I worked full-time constructing timber frames for Thomlinson’s Sawmill. In 2003 my mostly Cornish family decided it was time to return home and I worked here as self employed framer. In 2008 I met a kindred wood spirit and Carter & Hayward was born.
